Best Boxing Gloves for Heavy Bag Work

Whatever your level of experience, you will need a decent pair of boxing gloves to get the best out of your heavy bag workouts and to minimise the possibility of injury. A good pair of bag gloves should be designed to protect your knuckles when hitting the bag while allowing you to become accustomed to heavy impacts at the same time. In other words, you need enough padding to avoid injury but not so much that you cannot feel the weight of the blows you are landing.

Bag Gloves – The Key Factors to Consider

When you are choosing a pair of bag gloves to use on a regular basis with a heavy bag, the following factors are the most important to consider.

  • Wrist Support – Modern gloves designed for use with a heavy bag are quite different to those commonly in use up until just a few years ago. Firstly, and most importantly, they provide plenty of support for your wrists, enabling you to hit the bag with full force, without fear of injuring your wrists in the process.

  • Padding – In order to protect your knuckles, ample padding is required. However, as mentioned above, you do not want the padding to be so dense that you are unable to feel the mistakes you are sure to make when first starting your training. Older gloves designed for bag work featured very dense padding that gave little to nothing in the way of feedback to those who wore them. Being able to feel each and every one of your mistakes will allow you to improve your technique far more rapidly than would otherwise be possible when working with a heavy bag.

  • Weight – Beginners should start out with a relatively light pair of gloves for bag work, progressing to heavier ones when they are preparing for a real bout. If you are not sure what weight to choose, consult your boxing trainer before you make a purchase. Alternatively, you can discuss the matter with experienced staff at a reputable retailer such as Fight Outlet.

  • Moisture-Wicking Liner - A liner made from a material that wicks moisture away from the palm will keep your hand comfortably cool when you are working out. Without such a liner, your hands may start to feel hot and sweaty, reducing the amount of time you are able to spend on bag work.

  • Tough, Durable Material – The outer layer of the glove should be made of a material that will withstand the wear and tear inflicted on it during training sessions. In recent years, synthetic materials have become more popular owing to the combination of low cost and excellent durability they have to offer.

If you have been boxing for a number of years, you probably already have a very good idea of the type of gloves that you would like to wear for bag work. On the other hand, if you are just starting out, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the team at Fight Outlet for help and advice.
